Yoga Retreat vs Yoga Teacher Training: Which Experience Do You Need Right Now?

Yoga Retreat vs Yoga Teacher Training: Which Experience Do You Need Right Now?
31 March, 2026

Both will change you. Both will ask something of you. But they’ll ask for different things, and knowing the difference could be the most important step you take on your yoga journey.

You’ve been practising for a while now. Maybe you’ve found a style that lights you up like a flowing vinyasa yoga class, a restorative evening session, or a yoga nidra practice that leaves you feeling renewed. And now, you’ve found yourself in a place where you want more.

But more of what, exactly? That’s the question. Because there are two very different paths that you can take: a yoga retreat or a yoga teacher training program. While both are beautiful, they serve very different purposes. Let’s explore them honestly, so you can choose the one that’s truly calling you.

What is a yoga retreat?

A yoga retreat is an immersive escape designed to help you rest, reset, and reconnect with your practice away from the demands of everyday life. Yoga retreats in Mexico, like the ones offered at Yandara, typically combine daily yoga classes, meditation, nourishing food, and sacred community in a setting that lets nature do some of the healing.

Retreats range from a long weekend to a couple of weeks. They’re designed to give you space, not to acquire new skills. Think of it as pressing pause on the noise of your life so you can finally hear what’s underneath.

You might practise yoga flows on the beach at sunrise, explore yoga nidra for deep rest, or simply spend an afternoon journalling by the ocean. There’s no curriculum to complete, no qualification at the end. Just presence.

What is yoga teacher training?

A yoga teacher training course is a structured, immersive education in the art and philosophy of yoga. It’s where you learn to teach yoga poses, build yoga flows, understand anatomy, study the philosophical foundations of the practice, and begin to find your voice as a guide.

But here’s what surprises most students: yoga teacher training isn’t only for people who want to teach. Many people complete a yoga teacher training program purely for the depth of personal transformation it offers.

How do you know which one is right for you?

The honest answer is: listen to your body and your life. Here are a few questions to sit with.

Choose a yoga retreat if…

You’re exhausted, overwhelmed, or craving stillness. If you need to fill your cup before you can think about giving to others, a retreat is your medicine. You don’t need a reason beyond needing rest.

Choose yoga teacher training if…

You feel a pull toward sharing this practice. If you’re curious about what qualifications you need to be a yoga instructor, or wondering how long it takes to train as a yoga teacher, those are signs your curiosity is ready to be answered.

A common question we hear: is a 200-hour YTT worth the investment? For those who feel genuinely called, the answer is almost always yes. Not just for the Yoga Alliance certification or the career possibilities, but for what the journey does to you from the inside out.

What if you’re not sure yet?

Start with a retreat. Seriously. A yoga retreat abroad, especially one in a place as alive and open-hearted as Mexico can be the experience that solidifies everything. Many of Yandara’s teacher training students first came to us on retreat. They arrived needing rest. They left knowing exactly what their next step was.
